Totally satisfied with the best whole house water filters we bought from PureWaterExpress.com
Our kids and pets
Delighted customer
"We bought the Deluxe Whole House Filter with UV ($1,943) and Conqueror III undersink RO ($399) from Crystal Pure Water. We are ecstatic about the water quality, both throughout the house and for drinking water. We are totally satisfied with their products and service. Crystal Pure is knowlegeable, honest, courteous, prompt and reliable. In fact, we are so pleased, we plan to install the identical set in the new house currently under construction. We highly recommend the company."

Krintin Canty, Massachusetts (filters installed in May 2005)

  • Acid Neutralizer - Restores low pH to neutral (to near 7)

Reverse (or up) flow model: all we can say is it works like a champ

  • Economical, efficient and requires minimal maintenance
  • Straightforward installation, see diagram, 1" FPT in/out, that's all
  • Down the center tube, then water bubbles up through media (hence, up flow)
  • Acid eats away the media, media volume decreases with time
  • Add media when down to 1/4-1/3 tank height, leave 12" space at the top
  • When back lit, you can see the media level in amber color tank
  • Calcite alone works quite well 99% of the time
  • If iron, manganese and/or sulfur are present, mix in some magnesia (MgO)
  • We find a mix of (5) calcite and (1) magnesia by weight works quite well
  • No chemical regeneration required, nothing is imparted into the house water
  • We have sold several hundred of these units, not one problem or complaint
  • Unit price, no media included - includes a dome hole/removable plug for easy media insertion

Reverse Osmosis Filter for Whole House Water - Sometimes you have to go all out!

Whole house RO filter implementation - not to be entered lightly, unadvisedly - click for typical installation diagram

Rather than the expensive RO option, we encourage home owners to first look for non-RO type special purpose filters, described above, to accomplish specific filtration objectives. In addition to its costliness, RO process is rate limited and also has to throw out, on average, about half the incoming water as dirty waste. Because RO makes water slowly, you have to store the processed water in a storage tank big enough to meet the peak demand of a household. Then GPD rating of the unit has to be large enough to refill the tank before the next peak demand period arrives.

A whole house RO system consists of four functional blocks. 1) Pretreatment filters, 2) RO, 3) atmospheric storage tank plus repressurization pump, and 4) post treatment filters. Pretreatment and RO are explained below. Click for storage tanks and click for repressurization pumps. In a modern house where sinks, showers and baths are separately plumbed from toilets and such, a bladder type tank or two may substitute for a large open tank and a repressurization pump.

Some people describe the raw RO water as acrid, tangy or sharp tasting. In fact, depending on the supply water chemistry, the RO water can be acidic. The post treatment stage 4) can consist of an acid neutralizer, carbon "polishing" filter or two, sometimes followed by a UV filter. Neutralizer if permeate is excessivly acidic, carbon rounds off the taste, and UV for organisms that may potentially grow in the post-RO storage tank/pump, particularly in warmer climate.

Source Water Preparation - to prevent premature membrane fouling, to increase pure water to waste water ratio

Large RO membranes are expensive, hence, most source water is pretreated so as not to foul them up ahead of their natural life. The cleaner the water, the longer the membranes will last. We then can set the pure water recovery rate that much higher, thus saving on water bills.

    Source water quality requirements

    • Water temp: 85F max
    • TDS: 2,000 ppm max
    • Iron tolerance: 0.5 ppm max
    • Hydrogen sulfide: must be removed
    • Silica tolerance: less than 125 ppm, antiscalant should be considered for over 75 ppm
    • Turbidity: must be removed
    • Hardness: over 10 gpg should be softened
    • pH range: 3-11
A source water analysis is recommended before considering a large GPD RO system. We can help you pretreat water for most conditions. The throughput capacity of the pretreatment equipment must be sufficient to adequately filter the sum total of the permeate flow (RO GPD rating) and the anticipated waste water flow into drain.

At lower source water temperatures of less than 77F (25C), actual RO production will be less than the system GPD rating. To estimate the actual production, GPD rating has to be divided by 1.19 at 68F (20C), by 1.47 at 59F (15C), by 1.89 at 50F (10C), by 2.58 at 41F (5C). The temperature derating effect must be included in your system design consideration.       Top

Monitor RO Performance - digital TDS monitor TDS-3 lets you know when to replace membranes

  • TDS (totally dissolved solids) is a major indicator of water purity
  • Some positively charged ions: Fe++, Cu++, Pb++, Ca++, Na+, Mg++, Ra++, Ba++
  • Some negatively charged ions: OH-, CO3-, Cl-, HCO3-, SO4--, HSiO3-
  • TDS monitor measures electrical conductivity due to all these current carrying ions
  • Higher the TDS reading in parts per million, dirtier the water
  • Model TDS-3 monitor from HM Digital is easy to operate, 200 plus hours on a battery
  • Measures TDS value and water temp separately
  • Size: 5.5" x 1.2" x 0.8", weight: 3.2 ounces, rugged, accurate, LCD digital readout
  • Change the RO membrane when the TDS value is high, say 200 or more
  • TDS-3  $44.95, shipping in the US included, extra for AK, HI and overseas     Top
